My god I remember those bonanza episode reruns from when I was a kid in the late sixties/early seventies. Stories like these have doomed my emotional and sexual existence to a lifetime of endless disappointment and constantly picking the wrong partners to woo. Fuck you, Robert Altman, you’ve got a lot to answer for.

His best movies – ‘Short Cuts’ and ‘Gosford Park’ – came so late in the day, it’s an even greter shame this uneven genius is lost to us.

His once-’maverick’ innovations can be seen everywhere now – not least on US TV. I can’t watch ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ without thinking of ‘Tanner 88′; or ‘Deadwood’ without seeing ‘McCabe & Mrs. Miller’ all over it.

The underrated ‘Long Goodbye’ casts a long shadow over all the ‘neo-noir’ that followed. Even the recent trend in existential/metaphysical sci-fi has it’s roots in the forgotten ‘Quintet’.

He was one of a kind, and his offhand brilliance will be missed.

Too bad his last film was the cornball Prairie Home Companion though.
