[...] The digital magazine project will be helmed by cyberculture icon RU Sirius, who happens to be a member of our very own local transhumanist chapter, BA-Trans. RU Sirius can be described vaguely as a cross between Timothy Leary and Howard Stern, although this certainly doesn’t do the unique man justice. I am very excited about him taking his involvement with transhumanism to the next level. Just to hop on the memory train all the way back to May 2007, here’s my interview with RU, “Give Me Immortality or Give Me Death!” [...]

i'm not sure what this guys on, most of the time he's pretty coherent, but there's a few occasions where he leads R U in a circle for example: RU: Do you think chaos is built into life? As the Artificial Life people have been saying, life happens on the boundary between order and chaos. If chaos is an element of life, can machines include chaos?

MA: Well, uh — hmm. I think that people overestimate the power of chaos.

RU: As a Patti Smith fan, I have to disagree.

MA: (Laughs) Well, it’s such an appealing idea — chaos. But if you take a look at human blood and compare it to some random bit of muck you find in the ground, you’ll see that it’s highly regulated, and there are huge complements of homeostatic mechanisms in bodies that are constantly ordering things. Relative to the entropy in the air array outside; inside my body is a very orderly place, Life forms are very well organized pieces of matter.

RU: Right, but if you achieve complete homeostasis, then nothing happens.

MA: That’s true. Life does have to be on that boundary so it is challenging.

well anyway. to the argument about singularit i say that we really underestimate the human brains potential, to be honest. because of 1400 years of tribalism, rule and oppression that we've had to fight aginst and the amount of ignorance that the human brain has to overcome, it has left on a one way track of trying to fight againt something all the time. i reckon if we really carry on looking into ways we can improve education and certain meta-programming "tools" that help us to question our own thinking and improve it, it will create other levels of abstraction that we could use to improve our cognitive abilities to that level that we are expecting A.Is to get to, i don't think the human brains potential has even nearly been reched (even without the incorporation of technology). one thing that, i think, will take A.I years to produce as a "tool" is intuition, which is of fundementle importance.

as to the live forever thing and linda's reply i say, well you can die, only with immortality age won't be a problem, so, you can choose when to die.

When I think of all the a-holes I have to deal with on a daily basis, the image of me dealing with them indefinitely is rather depressing. If we had a means to make them disappear into thin air and/or teleport them, that would be great. But, then that also means that there would probably be very few, if any people left on the planet. Immortality would also cause tremendous stress on the economy, our resources, and our patience.
