The Prison-Industrial Complex isnt’ about the prisoners producing anything, it’s about “selling” product to a captive audience. It’s about the contract that supplies the prisons with uniforms, food, etc… The companies that have these contracts have an interest in keeping prison populations high, not in rehabilitation or any other societal good.

Hey! I really enjoyed this article. I just have a question about this:

I was really interested to read this, ’cause I’d never heard it before. I did some looking around to try and read more info about it and couldn’t find anything. I did find some really interesting info about James Earl Ray, such as the fact that even MLK’s family, and most of the people who were with him when he died, don’t think he did it, but nothing about Congressional hearings or conclusions thereof.

You don’t happen to have a source you could cite about this, do you?

21. No socialists!

You can support socialistic policies (like Kucinich’s health plan, or even Edwards’s), you can certainly voice support for labour rights, but you cannot actually call yourself a “socialist”. Even Kucinich and Gravel, whom the Political Compass (for one) charts within the range of Europe’s various Socialist Parties, would never use that word. (Then there’s “communist”, but the Russians have probably ruined that word forever.)

Um…have you listened to Mike Gravel or looked at his website. If you had, you would know that he talks openly about a good number of these, such as ending the War on Drugs and the military (or prison, as you say)-complex.

Also, who determines what makes him a “fringe” candidate? It’s people who dismiss him like one, like you did. Just because he is an actual liberal, it doesn’t mean he’s “fringe.” I consider almost all of the other democratic candidates to be centrists or third-way democrats.

But of course, if someone like Mike Gravel were to get the nomination, I wouldn’t expect the Democratic Party to support him. Just like how it didn’t really support George McGovern in 1972. I almost hope one of the centrist candidates goes up and loses to the Republicans, and the Democrats lose all power, just to see the Democratic Party finally die like it ’s been slowly doing for 40 years; maybe then we can have a major party that actually represents true liberals.

Great article. Let’s see how RON PAUL stacks up. He would end the War on Drugs. This would lead to the dismantling of the Prison Industrial Complex. He opposes victimless crime laws, including laws that criminalize sexual activities. He totally favors religious liberty. He would end US military intervention in the affairs of other nations, and sees the only legitimate role of the military as national defense, and this would open the way to massive military budget cuts. He acknowledges and opposes US militarism. While not singling out Israel, he opposes military aid to all nations, and would not intervene militarily in the Middle East. He is a monetary expert who for his entire political life has talked about the way government wrecks currency. He’s totally against the Nanny State, and for that matter, most of the rest of the State as well. Not bad!

Problem with direct democracy is the same problem with giving the UN too much power. Minorities will get slaughtered. There are still enough anti-semits, anti-black, anti-disestablismentarialists (joke), and others to turn the US into a really hellacious place. If civil rights had been left to direct democracy in 1960’s we might have Nurenberg Laws, instead of civil rights legislation. Yes I saw your comment about putting in a framework to protect people from the majority, but then some would argue against that and decide the majority rules absolute.
