As for claiming the believers of the bear cult as ancestors; that is only true for a minority of the people in the Americas. Most of them will fin their ancestry in Europe and Asia.

Santa Claus as he is seen today probably is a mix-up of Saint Nicholas and the pixies of house gods of the early germanic population of northern Europe. Beliefs and superstitions brought to the Americas by immigrants and in the tradition of such things mixed up to form new beliefs.

Then the new house god or piie or saint – whatever you will call it – was taken up by merchants to promote sales. In the end it is “Money” or “Mammon” that is the evil part of it. The good part of Santa Claus, as represented by Saint Nicholas, which is the help given to those who are in need, becomes less and less every year that goes. The evil part, often well supported by fundamentalist with no morality at all, is the exploitation of good ideas to bring people into overly large consumption, jealousy and dissatisfatcion with life in general.

Fundamentalist are criminals against humanity, not a pixie who in his original being is the bringer of help needed.

Sure Santa is sometimes nice, and sometimes terrifying. There’s a number of mythological beings that show up in the winter to either give out gifts or steal children or devour them whole. But there’s no evidence to suggest that only the decedents of bear gods will have to characteristics. Why wouldn’t it be coyote or crow or even the sun? Of course, it doesn’t make sense for it all to be just one animal anyway. We’ve got a Yule Goat and the Christmas Cat (both terrifying despite what you might expect from those animals). Are they actually secretly bears too?

While Santa is undeniably partly the decedent of various myths that get lumped into the term “pagan,” there are also Christians in his family tree. Saint Nicholas was a real man who inspired what became the American Santa, and it’s an incomplete picture to leave him out when talking about Santa.

Whatever his origins, Santa Claus evolves and changes to suit the times and the places he ends up, and its the descendant of a multitude of beliefs.
