I like that opening quote.

I think the line between "conservative" and "neo-con" is blurred for most people, including conservatives themselves -- Rush Limbaugh does not refer to himself as "neo-con" but as a "conservative", despite the fact that he agrees with neo-cons on every issue, thus the intended meaning of the opening quote: people who refer to themselves as conservatives, despite the fact that they have little in common with conservatives of the past. Conservatism"today is a "big tent" as the GOP likes to say.

To his credit, Buckley remained his own man, whether it angered anyone on the left or right, and (ignoring his admittedly shameful incident with Vidal) he was far more polite than almost any of the popular conservative pundits today. That is probably all I will miss of Buckley-- honest debate instead of loudmouth name-calling.

(I cannot for the life of me understand his disdain for the Beatles and worship of Elvis. I guess John and Paul's singing voices where hardly as smooth as Elvis's, but they more than made up for it in timeless songwriting.)

Small correction: the song Kerouac was singing was "Flat Foot Floogie", though perhaps he actually did say "Floozy", as legend has it was the original word in the title.

Sorry, you forgot something. What about this National Review editorial from August 24, 1957, “Why the South Must Prevail”:

" The central question that emerges . . . is whether the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally, in areas in which it does not prevail numerically? The sobering answer is Yes — the White community is so entitled because, for the time being, it is the advanced race. It is not easy, and it is unpleasant, to adduce statistics evidencing the cultural superiority of White over Negro: but it is a fact that obtrudes, one that cannot be hidden by ever-so-busy egalitarians and anthropologists"

I'd say that controversial.

I've been told that they didn't actually sail out to international waters (was a bit of fiction). I was also told they felt no effects, but did eat an entire loaf of bread that evening.

Lou, I love the write-up but neo-conservatives (mentioned in the intro) have nothing to do with conservatives. "Neocons" are basically American liberals, who have bought into the idea of "American Exceptionalism" and the pursuit of exporting American-styled liberal democracy by all means (from diplomatic to military).

For example, an extreme conservative would do a Pat Buchanan and cease all US military operations outside its border and stop any sort of aide (from missiles for Israel to food aide for refugees in Africa). On the other hand, an extreme neo-conservative could be said to invade a country that doesn't have enough liberal free-market as it would like. Exaggerations, of course, but I think they illustrate my point.

I dont' really think "Buckley's position was unexpected" on marijuana. He had written about drug legalization many times before, including in a 1996 National Review cover story.
