I had to laugh listening to this. I remember my Mom watching Lawrence Welk reruns. She died almost 10 years ago and today is her birthday.

“The Lawrence Welk Show” re-runs can still be seen, in the SF Bay Area, on KSCM Channel 60, most saturday nights…it’s sponsored by General Hydroponics…Polka is, indeed, hip again…

Lawrence Welk was ahead of his time, in many ways. Nowadays, bands like Jimmy Sturr, The Polka Nuts and Big Joe’s Polka Show are making BIG money with live performances and weekly broadcasts. Polka bands are in demand for Oktoberfest celebrations.

I think the polka scene can be explained in five letters: h.a.p.p.y. There are no sad, tear-in-your-beer, she-done-me-wrong songs!

As much as we find Welk ‘kitchsy’ and have a sense of ‘dear god, don’t make me watch this’, I’m pretty sure that if our grandkids catch us watching 80s or 90s videos and such, they’ll consider us just as nuts as we thought our grandparents were.

Welk played the music they knew, in a way they liked, and did it rather well.
